It's Tina, thank you so much for being here. I wanted to offer some insight into how I've set up the Sushi Bar so that you can get clarity on how things work around here. I felt this information would be important to include in the training everything has specifically been designed help me lean into my strengths, and address weak areas. Something you should know about me is that I’m introverted, and have been diagnosed with ADHD + General Anxiety Disorder. Over time I've learned that this means I need to protect my energy very carefully because creating new artwork is mission-critical for the business — and it’s the thing that suffers first when I burn out. Everything I ask of the team is designed around this reality + maximum efficiency so I can give you my best support when it’s truly needed. Core Expectations High Autonomy is the Default Everything is assigned by roles. You'll have a specific role that is your official position and there may be other roles you may be asked to help with. Every role has an article in the team blog that outlines what that roles responsibilities are, a task list, and other important details that you can reference anytime if you don't know what you need to do. I should have already offered you a Role article for your review, but you do not already know the role you are working within, then definitely say so so I can give you some starter guidance, but beyond that you’ll be expected to self-manage your time and progress on those responsibilities and report in every Tuesday without me checking in or reminding you about things. Most of the roles are not full-time positions in themselves, but you are encouraged to review the full list of roles and learn how to perform a secondary role as well if you wish to work full-time with us. I'm a big fan of cross-training because it gives us all the opportunity to see how our main role impacts the work of other roles, and it makes it easier to find someone to fill in when we need time off.View All RolesWe have systems in place so you can solve most things independently. → You can find anything you need when you start from the Team Dashboard (sushitomodachi.co/team) → There is an extensive knowledge library available at the bottom of the dashboard, with “Start Here” links for day one level learning. → We have a centralized shared inbox where tasks are queued and customer correspondance comes in, you'll never need to ask what needs to do because all you need to do is open that inbox. → Mis en Place mindset: This is a cooking term that means 'everything in it's place', which in our case means that everything critical to the task you're working on should be 1–2 clicks away (or bookmarked by you if it isn’t yet), or within arms reach if you're working on a physical task. → Catering Crew will have their own self guided training, but you'll also recieve a binder with everything important that you might need so that anyone can setup the booth by just opening the box. Catering Crew If you are here because you'll be working an event, autonomy will be important there as well! A few major things to keep in mind for events are: Event Pay and Reimbursement will occur on the Thursday after the convention. You'll be responsible for registering yourself, finding housing that works for you and arranging your own travel to the event. This ensures you are in full control of all of your arrangements and there is no stress or uncertainty for you. You'll need to keep copies of receipts and submit them to me so I can reimburse you after the event. Review the Compenstation Article so you understand how compenstation works. There is a budget for badges, hotel and travel, so make sure you are clear on what those are so you can make your arrangements with full awareness of what's covered and what isn't, so there isn't any surprises. Problem-solving follows a predictable flow In keeping with the idea of Mis En Place Mindset, we've worked to try to make problem solving as straight forward as possible. Anytime you have any problem to solve: Check the obvious places first (previous comments, inbox, dashboard, help articles, SOPs). Ask the team in group channels (asking the hivemind is usually faster than waiting for me). Bring prepared questions / options to the Tuesday team call — that’s dedicated resolution time when I’m prepared to problem solve with you. If you're not sure what to do, go back to basics. Most answers—including your core weekly objectives—are already documented in your role description on the Team Blog so you can move forward independently. I have a lot of moving parts to worry about, so I’m not the type of person who will have information readily available for you in my head, and I don’t want you to feel like you have to be that person for anyone else either. I’m gonna have just a few specific places I’ll direct you to for everything, and what I need from you is to let me know if what you need isn’t available in those places so it can be a better resource. Team-first Communication is Default; Not DMs Use group channels so others can jump in and help. Our discord is organized by department, so you can simply go into "the kitchen" category on Discord for any department and just start chatting there for on-topic work, pinging people etc. This is makes your life easier by placing all communications about a certain department in one place, where you and others can use the search function in the Discord server to find things. Tina's availability & boundaries Keep in mind that I do not act as a personal messenger and will expect you to use the group discord channels mentioned above and to follow up with others directly without me forwarding your message. How frequently you interact with others outside the department channels is between you and them, but for me, here's some information you should know before attemping to reach me. Quick status/update DMs not requiring a response from me are great (I’ll usually emoji-react); deeper questions or problem-solving go in group channels or Tuesday call. I use the shared shop e-mail inbox to queue up tasks for myself and the team. If you need me to do something work related, send an email containing clear, actionable details including a specific day/time deadline at least 7 days in the future to shop@sushitomodachi.com. As part of managing my ADHD, Phone ringer and DM notifications are turned off 24/7. My week is scheduled 7 days in advance and I have a strict routine built to help me maintain momentum, impromptu calls and chats interrupt this flow so I avoid them Tuesdays = dedicated interaction time (group call + focused 1:1s if scheduled). If it’s not urgent/emergency, write it down and bring it Tuesday — I lose track of things outside that window. Training & Education I do my best to provide you with training materials that are primarily self guided. This is done in the interest of ensuring that everyone has the same information when learning a new task and so I do not forget or overlook important details. This environment rewards self-starters who thrive with clear systems and written guardrails rather than constant live check-ins. If that sounds energizing, you’re probably in the right place. If you feel you need more consistent one-on-one time and guidance, then ask me to help find someone who can fill this need for you and make sure you join the Tuesday Meetings so you can get some of the time I've made available to you.
